Work from home: Most companies to continue with hybrid model in 2022 as Omicron threat lurks

Most companies will continue to follow a hybrid attendance model in 2022 over new the Covid-19 variant Omicron threatening the return to pre-pandemic normalcy. According to a poll by Times of India, as many as 86% surveyed said they will refrain from all recalling all employees back to the office in full capacity in the coming year as well.

Only a minority of companies surveyed hope to return to the pre-pandemic normalcy, it added, based on how Omicron or any potential variants pan out.

All consumer and information technology companies that participated in the poll have already adopted the hybrid model. Among the automobile manufacturing sector, four out of six surveyed said they have adopted the hybrid work model, the report further added.

Among those in the poll, Marico, Mondelez, Hindustan Unilever, Tata Motors, Maruti Suzuki India, and Hyundai have already transitioned to the hybrid model and will continue to do so in 2022 as well. Others like Nestle India will adopt the hybrid work model from the first quarter of 2022, it added.

PepsiCo India which is yet to recall employees completely will also follow the model once it decides to recall employees back to office.

Maruti Suzuki India follows a different version of the work of home model in which as many as 80% workers in some departments continue to operate from their residences while in other departments the number is at 25%. The company’s executive board member Rajesh Uppal said the hybrid model is more productive and effective.

In FMCG companies, Marico’s hybrid work system involves 20-25% of its corporate office employees attending office in an alternate week roster model, which the company is expected to continue.

GlaxoSmithline Pharmaceuticals (GSK Pharma) has implemented ‘Performance with choice’ which is a flexible work model which will be implemented across all corporate offices effective January 2022.
