Two year groups to home school for week after ‘large number’ of Covid-19 cases

Two year groups at a North Tyneside secondary school will be home schooling for a week after a “large number” of Covid-19 cases.

Years 7 and 8 at Churchill Community College in Wallsend are set to move to remote learning from June 15-23 as the students self-isolate.

A letter from the school seen by ChronicleLive says, “Following a large number of positive cases in students in Years 7 and 8, after discussion with representatives from Public Health and the local authority, we have made the decision to move to remote learning for all students in Years 7 and 8 from Tuesday 15th June 2021, with all students then returning to school on Wednesday 23rd June, unless your child’s official isolation period falls after this date.

“As far as possible we will be running live lessons for students following their usual timetable which will begin with a live assembly at 8.45am on Tuesday 15th June.”

It adds: “As we yet again move into a period of remote learning, we would like to ask for the support of parents and carers in order for us to continue your child’s education in this way.

“Please read through the following and if you have any questions or concerns, contact your child’s learning coordinator.”

Boris Johnson announced on Monday night that the final stage of relaxing lockdown restrictions would not go ahead as planned on June 21, but would continue until July 19.

That delay has been blamed on the spread of the Delta variant of the virus, which has become dominant in the UK over recent weeks.

While the fast-spreading strain has not yet been as prevalent in the North East as some hotspots, particularly in the North West, it has now caused a rapid spike in cases – with Newcastle, North Tyneside, and Northumberland all now reporting infection rates above 100 cases per 100,000 people.

Meanwhile, Gateshead recorded an infection rate of 65 cases per 100,000 people on Monday.
