Multipurpose travel gear and accessories save space and help you stay organized on the road. And when it comes to practical travel essentials, a passport wallet is a must. It protects your most valuable travel document and keeps your money, cards, and boarding passes in one place. A travel wallet differs from a simple travel holder because it features many more compartments that enable you to fit all of your travel documents and currency, with certain styles also accommodating smartphones, charging cables, and other small items.

After reviewing dozens of popular models, we chose Bellroy’s Travel Wallet as the best. Not only does it have a traditional folding wallet silhouette and a durable, high-quality leather construction, but it also has a couple of hidden features that will certainly come in handy on your next trip. Now, scroll down for a complete list of the best passport wallets on the market.

Bellroy Travel Wallet

Why We Love It

  • It has a sleek design and fits an impressive number of items.

What to Consider

  • The passport slot doesn’t accommodate German and Irish passports.

Bellroy’s sleek passport wallet hits all the right marks when it comes to quality, stylish design, and functionality. Its best feature is its versatility, though. Designed as a “wallet that also fits a passport,” you can easily use it as your everyday wallet. And that makes the investment even more worth it.

The classic foldable design unveils four credit card slots on the inside, which are also perfect for metro tickets, a driver’s license, and other small travel documents. On the opposite side, there is a slot for a passport. The slanted opening makes it easy to take it out and put it back in, while keeping it securely in place. There is another section for bills and boarding passes.

But what we really love about this wallet are all the hidden features, such as a second compartment for currency (so you keep your foreign currency and dollar bills separate). The wallet has a mini pen, so you never have to ask your seatmate again for their pen. Lastly, a special slot for a SIM card is also smartly integrated into the design.

It features separate pockets for your passport, boarding passes, vaccination card, and a zippered compartment for bills and coins. There is even a smartphone section that can fit a device of up to 5.8 inches.

Eight card slots allow plenty of space for credit cards, bus tickets, and IDs. A tiny SIM card slot, a pen holder, and a key ring round out this wallet’s impressive storage potential. Also nice — the wallet is cut from RFID-blocking vegan leather material.

Smythson’s travel wallet is available in several glossy leather finishes from classic brown and navy to bold green and peach. You can also personalize yours with up to three characters that will be embossed on the front lower right corner.

This Pacsafe travel case would do just that for you, plus you get the added benefit of having all of your travel essentials in one zip-around case. The main passport compartment can fit two passports, while two zippered pockets — a deep one for cash and coins, and a smaller one for an ID card — accommodate other valuables. Tips for Buying a Passport Wallet

Prioritize durable materials

Since your passport is the single most important travel document, keeping it safe from spills or accidental damage is essential. If you carry your wallet in the main compartment of a purse or a backpack with other travel essentials such as liquids, a water bottle, and pens, opt for a passport wallet made from a sturdy material such as tear- and water-resistant nylon (which is also super lightweight) or thick leather that can protect it from sharp objects. And of course, high-quality materials will always last longer, ensuring that your passport wallet accompanies you on your trips for years to come.

Decide how many compartments you need

Just like with a regular wallet, the functionality of your passport wallet will largely depend on how it meets your needs. Even if you avoid traveling with cash and coins, at the bare minimum, you’ll need a wallet with several card slots (keep in mind that you may need a few extra slots for metro or bus tickets, or your vaccine card), and a main passport compartment.

But it’s always a good idea for a wallet to have a compartment for cash since you may need it for small purchases or tips.

Look for additional security features

Certain passport wallets are made to accommodate an AirTag, which enables you to track it in case of theft or loss. You may want to opt for a wallet with a wraparound zipper that will prevent contents — like a passport — from sliding out on the go. RFID-blocking wallets can also add another layer of security during your travels.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What else can I put in my passport wallet?

Your passport wallet can be a multitasking powerhouse that keeps you organized. While you can certainly keep your passport, cash, and credit cards in it, certain styles also have room for a smartphone, charging cables, earphones, and a pen. However, be mindful that the more slots and compartments a travel wallet has, the bulkier it will be.

  • Where should I keep my passport wallet?

Place your passport wallet where you can easily access it at the airport or train/bus station, but also don’t forego security. If you travel with a backpack, place it in an inner compartment and avoid carrying it in any open-top mesh pockets. Some people go the extra mile and purchase a separate pouch with a waist belt or around-the-neck strap so it stays close to your body.

And if you prefer to travel ultra-light, you can always place your travel wallet in a zippered pocket of a jacket (with zippered being the keyword).

  • Should I put my passport in an RFID-blocking wallet?

RFID-blocking technology uses carbon fiber or aluminum to contain the electromagnetic signals produced by your card, so your personal data can’t be read by card skimmers. Since your passport is likely the most important document you will be traveling with, an RFID-blocking passport wallet can’t hurt as an additional security measure.
