See CNY school districts with biggest spikes in home schooling

Syracuse, N.Y. — Nearly every school district in a five-county region of Central New York saw a home-schooling surge during the Covid-19 pandemic, according to state data.

Of the 49 districts in Cayuga, Cortland, Madison, Onondaga and Oswego counties, 42 had more home-schooled students last year than they did in the 2019-2020 year, when the pandemic first hit.

Last year, the 2021-2022 school year, is the most recent for which state data is available.

Among the districts that saw a home-schooling increase, 31 had spikes of 50% or more. Eleven districts saw numbers at least double.

The Mexico Central School District in Oswego County had the biggest jump in home-schoolers. The total there increased 4,100% from four students in the 2019-2020 school year to 168 last year.

In Onondaga County, the biggest increase was in the Jamesville-DeWitt Central School District. The total there rose more than 189% from 19 home-schoolers to 55.

The Syracuse City School District, the region’s biggest, saw a jump of 45.7% in home-schoolers to a total of 325 last year.

The districts that had declines in home-schooled students during the pandemic included Cazenovia, DeRuyter, Tully, Fabius-Pompey, Morrisville-Eaton and Cincinnatus.
