Pete Buttigieg going into quarantine after COVID-19 exposure

WASHINGTON — Transportation secretary Pete Buttigieg will go into 14-day coronavirus quarantine after a member of his security detail tested positive for the virus, according to a new report.

The former Democratic presidential nominee and South Bend, Ind., mayor is not showing any signs of the respiratory disease and a test taken on Monday morning came back negative, according to a statement from his office.

Buttigieg, 39, was confirmed as President Biden’s transportation chief last week in a 86-13 vote by the Senate.

The former mayor is the first openly gay Senate-confirmed cabinet member and the second with a cabinet-level job after acting intelligence director Richard Grenell, who held that office last year.

Buttigieg faced no significant Republican opposition despite only previously managing South Bend’s small transit system which carries about 4,300 people per day on 66 buses, according to a 2019 report from the Indiana Department of Transportation.
