London| Claiming to represent King Leishemba Sanajaoba, two separatist leaders of Manipur announced on Tuesday the formation of the Manipur government in exile in the UK. The news has sparked concern over separatist tendencies growing in the north-eastern state. However, King Leishemba Sanajaoba has strongly condemned it.
Addressing a press conference in London, Yamben Biren claimed to be the Chief Minister of the Manipur State Council and Narangbaum Samarjit claimed to be the Defense and Foreign Minister of the Manipur State Council.
They said that he was speaking on behalf of the erstwhile Maharaja of Manipur and were formally launching the government of Manipur State Council in exile. Biren and Samarjit also submitted documents showing that they had found political refuge in the UK in August this year. “We call on all the governments of the sovereign states of the members of the United Nations for their recognition of the de jure and exile government of Manipur from today onwards,” they said.
The separatist leaders also claimed that they made an effort to engage with the Indian Government but they were met with hate and hostilities. Biren and Samarjit also claimed there were more than 1,528 cases of extrajudicial killings pending in Supreme Court which were being ignored.
CM says NIA will conduct an inquiry
After the government in exile was announced by the separatists, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh said that the government has taken it very seriously and a case has been registered against them. The case has been assigned to the Special Crime Branch. After the investigation, the matter will be entrusted to the NIA as they are working from abroad.
Manipur erstwhile King says he has no links with separatists
Meanwhile, Leishemba Sanajaoba-the King has slammed the move of two separatists leader saying that he had nothing to do with it. He also said that his name is being dragged in the matter and it will only spread negativity.
