Self-Driving Cars

How will self-driving cars change our daily urban lives?

By CarBook

In a world where autonomous vehicles (AVs) are the norm, planners say that we can expect to see many shifts in how people get around. If thought out, planners say, autonomous vehicles could increase car-sharing, which would reduce traffic congestion and air pollution. Because the technology will allow these vehicles to travel closer together, they will take up less lane space.

On a smaller scale, AVs will make it easier for people to live farther away from their jobs or school—because they won’t need to drive there themselves! This could open up new opportunities for communities with limited public transportation options.

In addition, AVs will make it possible for people with disabilities that make driving difficult or impossible (such as blindness or paralysis) to travel more independently than ever before.

If planners thoughtfully plan for autonomous vehicles, they could transform our cities.

Because these cars will be able to travel closer together, they will take up less lane space. This means more lanes for other vehicles and fewer cars on the road—a decrease in air pollution and traffic congestion.

In addition to helping with traffic flow, autonomous vehicles also have the potential to increase car-sharing. Because these cars can drive closer together, they are less likely to collide than human-driven cars. Because of this, planners say that autonomous vehicles could make it easier for people who don’t have access to their own vehicle to get around town without worrying about their safety or having to worry about parking meters or tickets while they are out exploring your city’s beautiful parks or trying out new restaurants!
