5G Phone: Why budget 5G smartphones are ‘good news’ for OnePlus and others in the US|

Budget 5G smartphones are the new battlegrounds for original equipment manufacturers like Samsung, Oneplus and Motorola in the United States, according to Counterpoint Research. T-Mobile is leading the way. The company is said to be pushing the boundaries when it comes to budget 5G smartphones ($ 100-250 band) in the United States. While AT&T and Verizon are focused on upgrading their base with the latest 5G premium offerings, T Mobile pushes the pedal with the 5G offer.
Launch of the “5G for all” campaign
T-Mobile has launched the “5G for All” campaign with the aim of gaining market share. The company has promised to provide free 5G smartphones for those who want to upgrade. T-Mobile started with the Samsung A32 5G and recently changed the offering to the new OnePlus N200 5G, a $ 216 smartphone. OnePlus N200 5G is the first 5G smartphone under $ 250 available on a carrier network.
The company recently announced another 5G device under $ 250 in the form of the REVVL V + 5G. The device, which will sell for $ 199.99 on Metro and T-Mobile, is the fifth iteration in the REVVL line of smartphones. Previously, TCL and Motorola have made REVVL phones, however, this time Wingtech will be making the latest device for T-Mobile. Overall, when looking at 5G smartphones under $ 300, the operator now has five devices available at retail, compared to just one from AT&T (Samsung A32 5G) and Verizon (Motorola One 5G UW Ace).
What Makes Affordable 5G Smartphones a Huge Opportunity?
In 2020, sales of low-budget smartphones in the United States would have accounted for around 20% of total sales. What makes it crucial for companies like OnePlus is that it’s not a price range dominated solely by Apple and Samsung, like in the premium segments at $ 600 and above. Instead, OEMs like Motorola, TCL / Alcatel and LG on the verge of closure are competing with Samsung for market share in this group. With LG leaving the race, there is a significant market share to be gained. This represents a great opportunity for OEMs to gain both market share and opinion share, especially when it comes to 5G and its capabilities.
Pricing matters
5G smartphones are getting cheaper and cheaper thanks to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 480 5G SoC and MediaTek’s Dimensity 700 5G SoC. Prepaid and postpaid service providers are eager to have more 5G smartphones in their wallets, especially as they want customers to upgrade their plans to 5G. With the launch of more devices in the second half of 2021, we expect increased competition for the market share of 5G budget smartphones.
